Pre-Provisioning Services
The Pre-Configuration Service is a cloud-based capability provided by RAK through the WisDM platform. It allows you to complete the entire setup process from Organization, Location, to Gateway before your devices are delivered or powered on.
Once the devices are powered on, WisDM automatically applies all pre-defined configurations, enabling zero-touch deployment from factory to field.
Supported Methods
WisDM supports two complementary pre-configuration methods: Factory Pre-Provisioning and Customer Self-Configuration. Both approaches lead to fully automated activation upon the first device power-up.
Factory Pre-Provisioning
In the Factory Pre-Provisioning method, RAK handles the initial device registration for you. Each gateway’s Serial Number (SN), EUI, and Model are automatically synchronized from the RAK production system to your WisDM Organization.
Once this process is complete:
- Your gateways appear in WisDM under the Pre-Provisioning state.
- They are automatically linked to your Organization.
- You can view, assign, or pre-configure them before shipment.
For configuration instructions, refer to Gateway Management.
When the devices are shipped, all configuration data is already synchronized in the cloud. As soon as your gateways connect for the first time, WisDM automatically provisions them, achieving true zero-touch activation without any manual steps.
Customer Self-Configuration
If you already have a list of Serial Numbers (SNs) and GWEUIs, but have not yet received the physical devices, you can still complete the full setup process in WisDM before deployment.
- Create and configure Locations and LoRa parameters.
- Add offline gateways and assign them to specific Locations.
- Perform bulk configurations, including:
- Naming your gateways
- Password setup
- Network settings
- Synchronizing System Settings
- Configuring LoRa modes and frequency plans
For configuration instructions, refer to Location Management.
Once your devices are powered on and connected, WisDM automatically synchronizes and applies all your predefined configurations, enabling Zero-Touch Deployment with no on-site intervention required.
Factory vs. Self-Configuration
| Factory Pre-Provisioning | Customer Self-Configuration | |
|---|---|---|
| Data Source | Auto sync via RAK production system → WisDM | Manually added in WisDM |
| Initial Gateway State | Pre-Provisioning | Offline |
| Responsible Party | RAK Factory | Customer / Integrator |
| Trigger Point | After factory production | Before delivery or rollout |
| Available Operations | Assign Location, bulk configure | Assign Location, bulk configure |
| Typical Use Case | Enterprise orders with factory-managed setup | Any user with SN/EUI list |
| Advantages | Automated, zero-touch delivery | Flexible, customizable configuration |
When to Use
Use the Pre-Provisioning Service when you want to:
- Prepare your deployment plan before the devices are shipped.
- Manage multiple gateways across different locations.
- Reduce on-site configuration time and ensure parameter consistency.
- Support distributors or system integrators in delivering pre-configured gateways to end customers.
Gateway Activation
After the gateways arrive at your site, the activation process is fully automated, regardless of which pre-configuration method you used.
- Power on the gateway.
- Connect it to the Internet via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Cellular.
- Wait a few moments, WisDM handles the rest.
WisDM automatically performs the following actions:
- Updates status from Pre-Provisioning / Offline → Online.
- Synchronizes cloud-stored configurations with the gateway.
- Activates system, network, and LoRa parameters automatically.
The entire activation process is hands-free no manual setup or login required.
